Let’s not be friends anymore.

Martin McDonagh once again does not disappoint with his new and highly allegorical film about two friends who have a falling out. Padraic (Colin Farrell) is shocked when Colm (Brendan Gleeson) no longer wants to be his friend. The two have been buds for what seems like years, and now this sudden shift has left somewhat dim-witted Padraic reeling.

The excellent dialogue of McDonagh is here once again, and while the exchanges overall may be a bit less snappy than his other work, there is still a lot being said. Padraic’s sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon) offers a level headed perspective while Dominic (Barry Keoghan) offers a view into who is affected by the allegorical elements.

The film is gorgeous. I can’t think of a better word for the wonderful setting, great shots, and memorable characters. It all works quite well.

However, I am finding this review to be exceedingly different as I don’t want to say what the major turning point of the conflict becomes, nor do I want to discuss the allegory. In a lot of ways, this movie would be easier to write an essay on than a review. It’s great! There’s a lot going on and you’ll feel deeply with these characters. Can I elaborate more? Not really.

For fans of McDonagh, they will know what to expect. His best ability is to create odd and memorable characters while exploring significantly deeper themes. This one might be his most upfront with what is being discussed, but that does not mean it isn’t still important. The symbolism and actions one of the characters take is jarring but somehow shockingly familiar.

The movie made me somewhat uncomfortable in the best way. It reminded me too much of current situations. The film is not moored to his temporal setting, but rather seems an examination of conflict as a whole.

I can’t recommend this one enough. I do think our top four actors deserve all the praise they have been given and more. You all know I do not pay much attention to the Oscars, but I am hoping Barry Keoghan wins. Seriously folks, you can check out any movie he is in and just be amazed.

One of the best films of the year.
